The Exhibition itself was curated by Jesse Goldstein of Space 1026.
Celebrating People’s History is a poster series organized by
artist and activist Josh MacPhee. In collaboration with artists from
all over the country, MacPhee produces and distributes posters that
pay homage to past political struggles, affirming a shared history
of radical action.
Project Hello is an ongoing photography project that asks artists
and amateurs from all over the country to photograph homeless people
holding a “Hello my name is…” placard with their
name written in. The project challenges both participants and audiences
to recognize homeless people as individuals.
Tit Pin, a collaboration between Toronto-based artist Paige Gratland
and Brooklyn based artist Ginger Brooks-Takahashi, creates a scenario
to explore the comfort in objectifying one’s own body. The artists
take portraits of individuals’ bare chests; the resulting images
are printed as pins to wear.
The You Are Beautiful project sets the message ‘you are beautiful’
in unlikely public spaces, functioning as an encouraging, voice in
alienating environments.
The West Philadelphia Re-Signage Committee is concerned with local
community-based politics; its members work literally at street level
to provoke and maintain a conversation about what creates neighborhood.
A/WAY addresses various issues regarding our relationship to nature,
with a primary emphasis on re-using and re-purposing materials, and
recycling. In addition to their individual projects, some of these
collaboratives will work together to produce new projects for this
exhibition.
The groups will also work with The University of the Poor’s
School of Arts and Culture, which is part of the Poor People’s
Economic Human Rights Campaign, to organize events to be held during
the course of the show and to strategize ways in which these projects
can help build towards broader social and political organizing. |
