"It was with me all along" was my internal response to breaking through, and knowing I just needed to do one thing to keep moving in the right direction.

It's fascinating how scale can take these tiny little letters, and make them look towering in the landscape. I have been interested in making maquette studies for some time, and have never had a moment to get around to it. I purchased these figures & trees in April 2016, and have been talking about creating these little worlds I see since then.

This piece is completely hand drawn, hand cut, & hand finished by Matthew Hoffman. Every part of this piece was sketched directly on the wood & immediately cut out. There was no assistance from laser/cnc machines.

it's nothing new
you know what to do
(you've known...you've known)
creating nothing but excuses
just do one thing
do the next right thing
one step in the direction
you want to be headed
get out of your head
and get it into the world
just one little step
then the next
until to you get here

At the beginning of the year, I sat down to create some new work, come up with new ideas, and create the most epic, amazing, & fulfilling plan for the entire year. And I quickly realized: I got nothing. Not in a negative way, but more of being weary from the uncertainty and monotony of the previous year.

I was talking to my dad, and said "There is nothing I have to do right now, so I'm not quite sure what to do next." He simply responded "Just do one thing. Do the next right thing, and then the next thing, and the next will come. That's all you can do."

I took it to heart, and that is where this collection of items came from. But I should also point out that it took to the end of February, a far cry from the start of the new year, but some things take as long as they take.

Things take time. Have patience with yourself. Believe in a compelling future. And in the meantime, just do one thing to keep you headed in the right direction.
