About the Installation
Installed in 2013 in the Miller Beach neighborhood of Gary, Indiana, You Are Beautiful transformed a familiar roadside sign into a simple public message.
Located near the southern edge of Lake Michigan and surrounded by the Indiana Dunes, the piece was created as part of ongoing efforts to support arts, culture, and community investment within the neighborhood. Visible to both residents and visitors, the sign became a recognizable landmark along one of Miller Beach’s primary corridors.
Unlike many public artworks designed for galleries or formal civic spaces, this project existed within the everyday landscape. The message appeared alongside businesses, traffic, and daily routines, allowing the work to become part of the neighborhood itself.
What began as a temporary installation remained in place for years, becoming woven into the visual identity of the area. Over time, the piece was photographed, shared, and encountered by thousands of people traveling through Miller Beach.
Looking back, the project represents an early exploration of placing positive messages directly into public space, an approach that would later expand into large-scale sculptures, architectural installations, and public artworks across North America.
